Scarfing up for World Scout Day

It’s not every day you get exclusive membership rights to one of the world’s oldest and more popular movements, but on World Scout Day, that was exactly the case for Ninderry MP Dan Purdie on Wednesday.

Mr Purdie said he was honoured to get ‘scarfed up’ by District Commissioner Ken ‘Roo’ Howes on Scout Scarf Day earlier this week.

“While I didn’t have the opportunity to join the scouting movement when I was younger, I certainly feel privileged to be part of this special occasion to mark World Scout Day,” Mr Purdie said.

“Scouting across our region has played an instrumental role in helping thousands of young people develop lifelong friendships, skills and memories, and it’s a proud tradition that I hope will continue to be fostered for many years to come.”

The idea of “Scout Scarf Day” on August 1 is that all active and former scouts are requested to wear their scout scarfs in public to make the “Spirit of Scouting” visible: Once a Scout – Always a Scout!

The date of the event commemorates the very first Scout Camp on Brownsea Island in 1907. While the scout scarf is only a symbol, it is a strong symbol for the scout promise and for their mission to leave the world as a bit better a place than they found it.
