Purdie slams Labor failure to protect child victims

Following widespread community outrage over the sentence handed to child killer Shane Akehurst last week, Ninderry MP Dan Purdie has slammed a Labor-led committee’s failure to back stronger child killer laws.

The Legal Affairs Committee earlier today decided against supporting LNP legislation which would introduce a new offence of child homicide, with a mandatory 15 year jail penalty.

“The committee, stacked with Labor MPs has today failed our most vulnerable, by failing to support what would be some of the toughest sentences in this country for the murder of innocent, defenceless children,” Mr Purdie said.

Mr Purdie, a former CPIU detective, was critical of last week’s sentence handed to Shane Akehurst, convicted of the manslaughter and torture of his 21 month old son, Corby.

A lead investigator on that case, Mr Purdie said grubs who intentionally harm innocent, vulnerable children deserve to have the book thrown at them.

“This Committee had a chance to ensure justice for those defenceless victims like Corby, and Jet Mason Lee, whose cruel death resulted in the creation of the LNP’s proposed laws,” Mr Purdie said.

Instead, the Palaszczuk Labor Government has shown complete disregard for victims and their families.”

The proposed LNP legislation guarantees that child killers receive a minimum of 15 years imprisonment for manslaughter, and 25 years for murder.
