A town centre Police Beat has marked six months of operation, with authorities reporting increased visibility and a focus on street crime and antisocial behaviour.
The state government stated that the Nambour Police Beat had led to police attending 130 calls for service and arresting 25 people for public nuisance and other street offences.
Minister for Police and Emergency Services Dan Purdie and Member for Nicklin Marty Hunt officially opened the facility in January after community concerns about safety in the town.
Since opening, officers have targeted street crime, antisocial behaviour and repeat youth offenders, delivering immediate results for local residents, businesses and visitors.
The introduction of the Police Beat has led to police: attending more than 130 calls for service; arresting more than 25 people for public nuisance and other street offences; investigating more than 80 stealing offences; and wanding more than 120 people using Jack’s Law.
Mr Purdie said the results showed why the Police Beat was needed.
“This Police Beat is just another example of how we are giving our frontline the resources they need to make Queensland safer,” he said.
Mr Hunt said the Police Beat was already making a difference.
“The community told us loud and clear they wanted a greater police presence in the heart of Nambour, and we delivered with the establishment of the Nambour Police Beat,” he said.
“While there is always more work to do, figures over the past six months show we’re heading in the right direction.”
Sunshine Coast District police officer, Acting Superintendent Jason Overland, said the Police Beat had strengthened visibility and improved community safety.
“In just six months, the Nambour Police Beat has made a real difference supporting our officers to enhance community safety,” he said.
“An increased, highly visible policing presence has improved our engagement with the community and created a safer environment, demonstrating how localised policing can deliver positive outcomes for public safety.”
