Collaborative approach key to securing road funding, says Coast MPs

Team work has been credited with securing the funding needed to start what is set to become the biggest infrastructure project in the region, according to Coast MPs.

Ninderry MP Dan Purdie, together with Nicklin MP Marty Hunt and the federal Member for Fairfax Ted O’Brien today welcomed news the State Government had finally stumped up their share of funding for the $300million overhaul of the Maroochydore and Mons Road interchange.

“Years of teamwork and lobbying have paid off and we’re happy to see the State Government allocate the remainder of their share of funding for this vital project in the Budget,” Mr Purdie said.

“This massive redevelopment will improve road safety for all users, including the hundreds of families accessing the Sunshine Coast Grammar School.

“Anything we can do to protect kids and families on the road is welcome.”

Fairfax MP Ted O’Brien said the multi-million dollar project is set to become the largest infrastructure project in the region once the Caloundra Road to Sunshine Motorway Bruce Highway upgrade is completed in 2020.

“The Nambour – Maroochydore Road roundabout is the major intersection that connects the hinterland and the coast, and this project will dramatically improve the flow of traffic and ease congestion on the highway,” Mr O’Brien said.

Nicklin MP Marty Hunt said it would be welcome relief for people in his electorate heading to Brisbane or the Coast each morning.

“I’ve been in that traffic plenty of times myself where it banks right back to the Big Pineapple.  It will be great to finally open that up and get things moving there with the new upgrades particularly with the redevelopments at the Big Pineapple.”

The Federal Government contributed $241million to the project and the State Government $60.25million on an 80:20 funding basis.
