Eco warriors take out Australia Day honours
One of the coast’s most recognised environmental groups has been named this year’s Community Group of the Year at the annual Coolum Lions Australia Day Awards.
Ninderry MP Dan Purdie congratulated Coolum and North Shore Coast Care for taking out this year’s title from a field of deserving contenders.
“For more than 20 years, Coolum and North Shore Coast Care has dedicated themselves to not only protecting our local environment, but encouraging others to get involved and take responsibility to help preserve the natural beauty of our region,” Mr Purdie said.
“I’ve seen first-hand just how passionate the members are, having joined in their weeding activities, and we’ve all heard about the valuable role they play during turtle nesting season, which is making a real difference to our local turtle populations.”
Mr Purdie said group was setting the benchmark across the region.
“Throughout the year, Leigh and the volunteers are involved in a number of different programs targeting various environmental threats and regularly host workshops to help educate the public.
“They are not afraid to get their hands dirty, and as a result of their efforts, more and more people are coming on board, becoming more aware of local issues and taking on a more active role in being part of the solution.”
“We are lucky to live in such a pristine environment, but even luckier to have such a dedicated group who are setting high standards when it comes to getting the message out there and encouraging each and every one of us to play our part.”
Other award winners included Citizen of the Year, Sergeant Ben Cox of Coolum Police Station, Youth of the Year Jaidah Jones, and Volunteers of the Year, Lindy and Kevin Horton.
